interview by Matthew Raymond

You for interact with dance music in a number of forms, as a radio host, producer, club dj and live sets. How do these different art forms impact the way you approach your craft?

I guess there was a progression through time, from doing radio to djing in clubs, then to producing and finally to playing live sets, and in some ways each of those provided a foundation for the next. But they complement each other in many ways. For example, the live set now feeds the studio work. I use it as a space to try out different sketches and versions of what I'm working on. I would also say that my live sets are influenced by my djing in terms of transitions and trajectory.

Have you ever had a major gear malfunction during a show (as older gear has a tendency to do)? How did you manage it?

Fortunately nothing too serious yet! I've been worried a couple times playing in very hot, humid venues but I was lucky. I sometimes bring a backup SP-404 that I can use to fill the silence if my main setup goes down ;) But from my experience attending shows, sometimes a malfunction is just part of the night, and audiences can handle it.

What different equipment that you have used over the years sticks out in your memory? Do you have a piece of equipment that you miss most? Do you have any pieces that you don't miss at all?

I started out exclusively using software, which was all I had access to. In the past couple of years I've started buying some gear; my current mainstays are the Electribe ESX-1, x0xbox, and '0scar' (a homemade oscillator that I always bring to shows). I like looking at gear but I also like to keep things streamlined and get as much out of what I have as I can.

Any advice for a producer who is looking to start prepping/creating a live set?Any advice for the actual act of performing?

I would say that you need to be confident about what you're presenting. So don't overextend yourself and practice until you are comfortable with the different elements of your setup. I've also found it useful in the past to find online master classes of different artists walking through their live setups – you might get some inspiration or ideas of how to improve what you're doing. Also, remember that the live set is going to evolve over time so each time doesn't have to be 100% perfect, but is a work in progress. When in doubt, don't hesitate to ask questions to other producers, online or in person, I've found people are usually very generous with sharing expertise.
