Egyptrixx
interview by Matthew Raymond

You are just coming out of massive 2xlp which contrasts the abrasive with serent tonal experiments and plays with decaying remnants of abstracted club sounds. Can you give me a bit of insight into the vision behind that record? And what's coming up next?

Sure, 'Pure, Beyond Reproach' was an attempt to imagine rhythms and patterns of sound from pieces of oceanic microplastic colliding amongst themselves; dripping-splashing-clanking-phasing. The rhythms were suggested as parallels to the human tendency towards total loyalty - "what wouldn't you do for the crew". Currently I'm travelling around for shows, running my label Halocline Trance and working on a couple of projects.

Have you ever had a major gear malfunction during a show (as older gear has a tendency to do)? How did you manage it?

Sure yea, lots of those. Usually switch it off, then on again...if that doesn't do the trick then just soldier on :)

What different equipment that you have used over the years sticks out in your memory? Do you have a piece of equipment that you miss most? Do you have any pieces that you don't miss at all?

I'm not too precious about gear and try to get rid of anything I haven't used in a few months. I'm a non-materialist and don't like clutter. Lately i've been re-amping and coloring a lot of sounds and have a few tube amps, pedals or preamps around. Synth-wise I like the Synthesis Technology eurorack stuff (Cloud Generator, Dual LFO) and have a bunch of digital synths: JD-800, Blofled, DX7, Wavestation etc. For VSTs I like the Slate Digital VCCs and the Soundtoy plugins, but will use anything really.

Any advice for a producer who is looking to start prepping/creating a live set?Any advice for the actual act of performing?

It's a great time to build out a live set - lots of small and affordable pieces of gear available now. No wrong answers with putting it together. Fundamentally you'll have to decide the scope of the set (performing songs vs. improvising vs. playing instruments vs. sound design etc) Once you've figured that out, you'll need to put together a setup. The egyptrixx live set is built around basic ideas of physical sound, viscerality and comfort.
