Yeah it's new! But I've been developing it for a while. I try not to think about direction when writing new songs, I just make what I like. Later I'll overanalyze everything of course, but the writing process is super natural.
Have you ever had a major gear malfunction during a show (as older gear has a tendency to do)? How did you manage it?
The oldest piece of gear I'm using live right now is my shitty laptop. My songs are vocal-heavy so I find that when my hands are too busy, I have a hard time performing. But yeah, laptops turning off, having to lose pedals mid-way through a set – it's rarely flawless. For the most part, no one notices.
What different equipment that you have used over the years sticks out in your memory? Do you have a piece of equipment that you miss most? Do you have any pieces that you don't miss at all?
I use a lot of soft synths, always have. I like hearing thousands of options before deciding on a direction, and once I get that one sound right, the whole thing comes together quickly. Right now I'm obsessed with all my kontakt vsts, especially "signal" – it's a "pulse engine" so it makes everything dance-y. I won't miss the plugins that have crashed and lost me hours of my life, non-cracked versions too. So annoying.
Any advice for a producer who is looking to start prepping/creating a live set? Any advice for the actual act of performing?
If you're feeling overwhelmed, you're probably overcomplicating it. Also, when you're on stage, focus on the people having fun. There's always going to be someone talking or walking past the stage to go for a smoke, who cares. Except for if no one is having fun, then cut it short haha.
